England East — Sydney R. Jones, The Studio Publications (1954)

Mid-20th Century (1950s)

Third and final volume of Sydney R. Jones's England trilogy — pen-and-ink topographical survey of Eastern England, 1954.

England East is the concluding volume of Sydney R. Jones's three-part topographical series. In his preface, Jones writes: 'This book is the last of three volumes with which I promised to amuse my readers.' Covering Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, East Anglia, the Fenlands, Midlands, Yorkshire, Durham, and Northumberland. Structured around an imaginary north–south line from the Thames to the Tweed dividing England East from England West. Published by The Studio Publications, London and New York. First published 1954. Printed by William Clowes and Sons Ltd.

Significance

The concluding volume of a landmark three-volume illustrated record of England's historic landscape and architecture. Jones explicitly notes in the preface that much of what he documented was already being destroyed — making the trilogy an invaluable visual archive. Royal Academy exhibitor with works in the V&A collection.
